Voice Recorder with Transcription for iPhone (2026 Guide)
If you only need to read back short English recordings, the free Voice Memos app on your iPhone already transcribes them. If you need other languages, a summary, action items, or to turn a recording someone sent you into text, you need a dedicated voice recorder with transcription. This guide shows the difference, compares the main options, and gives you a two-minute setup.
A voice recorder with transcription does two jobs in one place: it records audio and turns it into text you can search, copy and share. The second job is where apps differ most: how many languages they understand, whether they summarize, how long a recording can be, and where your audio is processed.
Option 1: Apple Voice Memos (free, built in)
Since iOS 18, Voice Memos transcribes recordings on iPhone 12 or later, fully on-device and offline. It covers exactly 10 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. It is free, needs no account, and nothing leaves your phone.
The limits matter as much as the features: no summaries, no translation, no import of audio files or voice messages from other apps, no search across all your recordings, and no speaker labels. For a grocery list or a quick idea, that is fine. For a 50-minute meeting or lecture, you end up with a wall of text and still have to read all of it. Our full Voice Memos comparison covers the details.
Option 2: Meeting bots (Otter, Fireflies)
If most of your audio happens inside Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, a meeting assistant is the better fit: its bot joins the call and transcribes it live. Otter's free plan gives 300 minutes per month with a 30-minute cap per conversation, in 6 languages (as of August 2026). Fireflies offers a free plan with transcription and 400 minutes of storage, and paid plans from $10 per seat per month billed annually (as of October 2026). Both have iPhone apps, but they are built around calls rather than recordings you make in the room.

Option 3: An AI voice recorder app (Audio Notes AI)
Audio Notes AI is built for recordings made on the phone: in-person meetings, lectures, interviews, ideas, and voice messages you receive. Tap record (or import a file), and after the recording you get:
- A transcript from OpenAI's Whisper model in 60+ languages, including Cantonese, which Apple does not cover.
- A summary and action items, so you read one paragraph instead of the whole transcript.
- Chat with the transcript: ask "what did we decide about the budget?" and get the answer.
- Translation of the transcript into your language.
- Imports: audio files, video files (mp4, mov), and WhatsApp or LINE voice messages through the iPhone share sheet.
- Encrypted sharing: notes are encrypted with AES-256 on your iPhone before upload, and links expire after 24 hours.
The honest trade-offs: transcription runs on a server, so it needs an internet connection; there are no speaker labels yet; and each recording can be up to 90 minutes. The free plan covers your first 3 notes or 60 minutes of transcription, whichever comes first; Pro unlocks 10,000 minutes a month.

How to record and transcribe on iPhone in two minutes
- Place the phone well. Put the iPhone on the table, microphone side toward the person speaking, within about two meters. Distance matters more than any app setting.
- Record. In Audio Notes AI, tap the record button. Keep the app open or let it run in the background; the recording is compressed on the phone so even a long session uploads quickly.
- Stop and wait about a minute. The transcript, summary and action items appear on the note.
- Use it. Search the text, copy it into your notes app, ask the chat a question, or translate it.
- Already have a recording? In Voice Memos, WhatsApp or Files, tap Share and choose Audio Notes. See how to transcribe Voice Memos on iPhone for the step-by-step.
Which one should you use?
- Quick personal notes in one of Apple's 10 languages: Voice Memos. Free and private.
- Mostly video calls: a meeting bot such as Otter or Fireflies.
- Lectures, in-person meetings, interviews, or voice messages, especially in other languages: an AI voice recorder like Audio Notes AI. If you are a student, see our best lecture recorder apps.
Download Audio Notes AI on the App Store. It is free to try, with your first 3 notes or 60 minutes of transcription included.
