Translate a Voice Recording on iPhone (Any Language)
Someone sends you a two-minute voice message in a language you do not read, or you recorded a meeting where half the room switched languages. Apps that translate live speech help while the conversation is happening, but they do little for a recording you already have. The reliable method is two steps: turn the audio into text in its own language, then translate that text. Audio Notes AI does both in one place.
How to Translate a Voice Recording on iPhone
1. Get the audio into the app
Record in the app, import an audio or video file (mp3, m4a, wav, mp4, mov), or use the share sheet to send a voice message from another app straight into Audio Notes AI. Recordings up to 90 minutes are supported.
2. Transcribe it in the original language
Transcription uses Whisper and covers 60+ languages, including Cantonese and recordings that mix two languages. Doing this first means the translation starts from the real words, not from a guess.
3. Translate the transcript
Pick the language you want and translate. The translation follows the transcript segment by segment, so the structure of the conversation is kept.
Why Transcribe First, Then Translate
| Approach | Good at | Weak at |
|---|---|---|
| Live translation while someone speaks | Conversations happening right now | Existing recordings, voice messages, meetings you cannot replay |
| Typing words into a text translator | Short phrases | Anything spoken: you have to type the speech first |
| Transcribe, then translate the transcript | Voice messages, interviews, lectures, meetings in any language | Needs internet; machine translation can miss names and nuance |
Tips for Better Translations
- Record close to the speaker. Clean audio gives a cleaner transcript, and the translation inherits every transcription mistake.
- Skim the transcript before translating if the recording has names, brands or numbers that matter.
- Keep the original-language transcript so you can check any sentence that looks odd in the translation.
- Mixed languages are fine. Switching between two languages inside one sentence is handled during transcription; see our guide to Cantonese voice to text for an example.
Limits to Know
Translation is machine translation. It is good for understanding and note-taking, but verify legal, medical or financial wording with a professional. Audio Notes AI does not label speakers. Everything needs an internet connection, and very long transcripts are translated in batches.
