Ask AI Questions About a Recording on iPhone (2026)
You have a 70-minute meeting, lecture or interview on your phone and one question: what exactly did they say about the deadline? Scrubbing through audio takes minutes, and even a good transcript is a wall of text. The faster route is to ask. In Audio Notes AI every note has an Ask AI chat, so you can ask the recording a question in plain language and get an answer written from what was actually said.
How to Ask AI About a Recording on iPhone
1. Record or import the audio
Record in the app, import an audio or video file (mp3, m4a, wav, mp4, mov), or share a voice message from another app into Audio Notes AI. Recordings up to 90 minutes are supported, in 60+ languages.
2. Wait for the transcript and summary
The recording is transcribed with Whisper and turned into a summary with key points and action items. The chat uses both, so the answer can point to the exact part of the conversation.
3. Open the note and ask
Open the note, start the AI chat (Ask AI), and type your question. Ask a follow-up in the same conversation and the AI keeps the context of your earlier questions.
Questions That Work Well
- Decisions: "What did we decide about the launch date?"
- Tasks: "List every action item and who was named for it."
- Lectures: "Explain the second example in simpler words" or "What will probably be on the exam, based on what the professor stressed?"
- Interviews: "What did she say about pricing, and in which part of the interview?"
- Catching up: "I joined late. What did I miss in the first ten minutes?"
Ask AI vs Searching a Transcript vs Replaying the Audio
| Method | Good at | Weak at |
|---|---|---|
| Replay the audio | Exact tone and wording | Slow on anything longer than a few minutes |
| Search the transcript | Finding a word you remember | Questions where you do not know the word that was used |
| Ask AI about the note | Summing up a topic, listing tasks, explaining a passage | Needs internet; answers can be wrong, so check the transcript for exact quotes |
What the AI Sees (and What It Cannot Do)
The answer is written from the transcript and summary of that one note, plus the conversation so far. It does not search your other notes in that chat. Two honest limits: Audio Notes AI does not label speakers, so "who said that?" is answered from names spoken in the conversation, not from voices; and everything here needs an internet connection because transcription and the AI run on our server.
Ask AI Also Works on Shared Notes
When you share a note, the person who opens the link can ask questions about it from their browser, without installing anything. The shared note is encrypted on your iPhone before upload and the link expires after 24 hours. Their question and the note text are sent to our AI to produce the answer, which our privacy page spells out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask AI questions about a voice memo on iPhone?
Yes. After transcription, open the note and start the AI chat. The answer is written from that note's transcript and summary.
Does the AI remember my earlier questions?
Within the same conversation, yes, so follow-up questions work without repeating the context.
Can the AI tell me who said something?
Not reliably, because Audio Notes AI does not label speakers. Names mentioned in the conversation can still be used to answer.
Can AI answers be wrong?
Yes. Use the answer to find the right part of the transcript, then confirm the exact wording there before acting on it.
Does it work on very long recordings?
Recordings up to 90 minutes are supported. For very long transcripts the app may send a shortened version to the AI, so ask focused questions about a topic.
